Conquering the Unwalkable City
One step, one bicycle, one Metro at a time!
www.conqueringtheunwalkablecity.com/
We are ready for a 30-day challenge, as we leave our cars behind and set out to conquer the so-called unwalkable city. Follow our journey as we see how many days in a row we are able to get to our destinations throughout the greater LA area—on foot, on bicycles, on scooters, by bus or by Metro. The only time we'll drive a car will be when we try out electric car sharing from Blink Mobility. Whatever happens, we’ll keep you posted every step of the way, because what we’re doing matters. Here’s why:
We like saving money
The average cost of car insurance is $1,343 per year. In addition, car owners must deal with maintenance and repairs, as well as parking fees (and tickets), not to mention the high cost of gasoline for those who don’t drive electric cars.
We want to be healthier
Sitting in a car burns very few calories, compared to walking to a bus stop or metro station. In high traffic, drivers experience far more stress than people who walk to their destinations. In cities with car-free zones, people are healthier, happier and more relaxed, in addition to being in better shape.
We enjoy quality time
Walking and taking mass transit provide wonderful opportunities for conversations, reading, and/or listening to podcasts and audio books.
We want to be part of the solution
We want to contribute to making the air cleaner, the greater LA area more peaceful, and our world transformed for the better.
Day 30
11/22/23
We Did it!
Since Hannah has an art show coming up, she’s been painting nonstop. So I’ve been taking Metro from downtown LA to Golds Gym in Venice and then trying out every bike and scooter app. So far I like Veo and Helbiz a lot, since they are super accessible. Definitely don’t need a car to do this. Stay tuned for my upcoming article!
Day 26-29
11/21/23
Every Day at the Beach!
Day 25
11/17/23
The New Car Substitute?
Check out this article!
We’re meeting more and more people who are actually doing this! Try one out. They’re amazing!
Day 24
11/16/23
Confessions!
At last I understand why Hannah always chooses to walk, take a bus or get on a train, rather than ride one of these Metro bicycles that I love. She finally admitted to me that she’s never actually learned how to ride a bicycle. But no worries. I’ll be attempting to teach her, so stay tuned!
Day 23
11/15/23
A Rain Celebration!
Rain is just what LA needs to keep everything green and beautiful, and free of fires! Yay for the rain, and Hannah is happy, too!
Day 22
11/14/23
No Cars in Sight!
I loved walking through Santa Monica on this stretch of street that’s only open to pedestrians. Imagine this everywhere, or at least in a lot more places. Enjoy!
Day 21
11/13/23
Art on the Go!
Hannah went to deliver some paintings for her next show! Traveling on the bus with delicate canvases is tricky, but they made it safe and sound. Come and see her work at the Black Market Courtyrard on opening night, the 25th. The address is 2060 Sawtelle Blvd, Los Angeles. See you there!
Day 20
11/12/23
Cheers!
I bought this tumbler/mug at Ross for Less and it’s the first one I’ve found that doesn’t leak! Since I’m not a straw person, this suits me perfectly. Plus it’s great for our car-free lifestyle, which of course also means no more single-use cups or bottles!
Day 19
11/11/23
Sunset in Santa Monica!
Hannah took the E-line of @metrolosangeles and ended up in Santa Monica in time to enjoy the sunset last night. So easy to get to Santa Monica on the E line from so many places. Try it!
Day 18
11/10/23
What's old is new!
Since Hannah has worked hard to bring me up to speed in the social media world, I decided to show her how we used to find our way around the world. Check out how happy she is! That’s because she can finally see how all the parts of this sprawling city fit together. Amazing!
Day 17
11/09/23
Coming soon: Hannah the Powerful
Since so many people have been concerned about our safety, I’m making Hannah enroll in a self defense class. Rest assured, I don’t need to take it with her, since I already know how to beat people up. Let’s wish her well!
Day 16
11/08/23
Beverly Hills: The Final Frontier
Hannah and I had a great time at the Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce event. We talked to the mayor about the Metro station that will be built in time for the Olympics. Can't wait!
Day 15
11/07/23
Healthier and happier!
Lots of people are afraid to walk around Los Angeles or take the Los Angeles Metro, but as this article indicates, the bigger danger we face is leading sedentary lives. It’s only been two weeks since Hannah and I gave up our cars, but we already feeling healthier and more energetic. Join us!
Day 14
11/06/23
Charged up! Not exactly.
One thing about being in a car is that you can easily charge your phone there. Obviously, I took that for granted, but I’m tackling the problem as best I can by getting a portable charger. Let us know what you think of these choices, or feel free to tell us about another one, because charging matters!
Day 13
11/05/23
All aglow and ready to go!
Look at Hannah's new clip-on light! She's ready to walk out the door, and now she'll be safer than ever on the first day of daylight saving time. These clip-on lights come in different colors. Wear one and live!
Day 12
11/04/23
Fear no Metro!
This is Dwayne, one of the wonderful Metro Ambassadors I’ve met, this time at the Grand Ave/Bunker Hill station. He’s the reason I felt great about taking the Metro today. I knew that if I had any questions or concerns, he would be there to help. I hope you'll give the Metro a try, and please thank Dwayne if you see him!
Day 11
11/03/23
Cool feature on Apple Maps!
Hannah and I have been walking around all afternoon in downtown Los Angeles and she just showed me a better way to use Apple Maps. I’m going to use it all the time now. Take a look! It’s the Avoid Busy Roads option. Try it if you haven’t already, and happy walking!
Day 10
11/02/23
Have tote bag, will travel!
Take a look at Hannah with her new Metro tote bag getting ready to get on the Metro of course! She’s headed to downtown Los Angeles on the E line, and has plenty of our buttons to share with her fellow riders. I can hardly wait to see the tote bags she’s designing. We’ll let you know when they’re ready. Here’s to Day 10!
Day 9
11/01/23
Decked out for Dia De Los Muertos!
Check out Hannah’s amazing make up, courtesy of face painter Kahlovera who helped make the Olvera celebration of the Day of the Dead well worth a visit. Hannah took Metro bus 76 to get to the event, where she was able to visit the shops and booths at a leisurely pace without a car in sight. Check out the festivities, which continue tomorrow. Here’s to another great day, and to bus 76!
Day 8
10/31/23
A scary (or not so scary) event!
Want to have some fun tonight in West Hollywood? Good news! The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval has returned! We’ll be there looking for scary costumes, but fear not, we won’t be too scared. That’s because the city will be closing a number of streets so attendees can walk around freely and safely. Even better, plenty of people will walk to the event itself, at least we hope they will. Let us know how you get there, and Happy Halloween!!!
Day 7
10/30/23
If only this cat could read!
I walked to the Village Well Books and Coffee to get this book for Hannah, since I enjoyed reading it (on the Metro of course). Arnold helped California became a leader in the environmental movement, and I applaud him for that. My sincere hope is that he will motivate countless people across the political spectrum to work together to combat climate change. It could happen. Let us know what you think. Better yet, join us! Here's to Day 7!
Day 6
10/29/23
We did it!
This is what happened today when LA closed part of a freeway! People of all ages joined in the fun on foot, on bicycles and on scooters. Some came in costumes, others with their pets. Even better, we weren’t the only ones who took Metro or rode bicycles to the event. I’m already excited about the next ArroyoFest, and events like it that put pedestrians first. Let us know if you were there today!
Day 5
10/28/23
Ready for the ArroyoFest!
Look for us at this exciting event tomorrow! Part of CA 110 will be closed to cars, so pedestrians and cyclists will have free rein! We’ll be taking the Metro to the Highland Park Station, but there are lots of ways to get there. Just take a look at the map. To read more about the event, check out this article! Hope to see you there as we continue to conquer the unwalkable city!
Day 4
10/27/23
Bikes on Trains!
Meet Mark. He’s a student at Santa Monica College and he chooses not to own a car. Instead he gets on the Metro with his bicycle in Los Angeles and when he arrives in Santa Monica, he enjoys getting around in the fresh air, rather than being stuck in traffic. Hannah and I have seen lots of people getting on Metro with their bicycles, scooters and skateboards. We’ll be talking with more of them. Stay tuned!
Day 3
10/26/23
On Foot and Still Alive!
After a day of walking around Los Angeles to appointments and interviews, Hannah and I feel energized and happy, as well as wiser. That’s because we are more aware than ever of intersections where a right turn on red light is not allowed. It definitely makes life safer for those of us on foot. In fact it’s one of the reasons San Francisco is considering a ban on the right on red option, and LA may follow suit. Check out the articles we posted in the FYI section of this site, and let us know what you think are the pros and cons on this issue. In the meantime, happy walking! Here’s to Day 3!
Day 2
10/25/23
So Many Great Choices!
This morning I opted for the E line Metro to Santa Monica and took off along the beach using Metro Bike Share to get to Golds Gym in Venice! Hannah took the Metro rail, followed by a bus to downtown LA where she had lots of fun in the Arts District replenishing her painting stock. So Day 2 off to a good start!
Day 1
10/24/23
Challenge Accepted!
Finally, we have left our cars behind and have begun our 30-day challenge. Watch our video so you can learn more about us and why we are doing this. We hope you will want to join us and show that green and electric transportation rule! Here’s to Day 1!
